Middlesex Annex comprises of North & South House plus the Workhouse.
The Grade II-listed building is a former workhouse dating back to the late 18th Century, one of only three remaining in London. Charles Dickens lived in Clevedon Street as a child and later as a teenager. It is thought the workhouse was the inspiration for Oliver Twist.
During excavation on the site, archaeological investigation recovered 55 intact human burials dating from 1770 to 1853. These were from three test trenches dug on the site.
Parish burial records suggest that “the total number of interments made at the site might be between 9,000 and 10,000″. But uncertainty was expressed as to how many remains had been removed after the workhouse closed and the building became an extension of the Middlesex Hospital.
